The Disturbed Soil unit (DS) <br />is not included in Table 2-1 due to its variability. The Disturbed Soil unit (DS) varies for <br />all characteristics depending on the amount and type of disturbance and original <br />character of the soil. <br />Soil surveys were conducted concurrently with vegetation mapping, which allowed for <br />close correlation of mapped soil units with vegetative cover. In addition, soil units were <br />differentiated based on geology, aspect, and slope steepness. Exposed soil profiles in <br />road cuts, walls of surface mines and exploration sites, underground openings, and <br />other excavations were examined. No additional soil pits were excavated. However, <br />the range in thickness and suitability of the upper horizons of each soil unit profile <br />occurring within the Study Area, as published by the NRCS and verified by JBR (1997), <br />are shown on Figure 2-1. <br />3.1.1 Grenadier-like-Unnamed Very Gravelly Loam Complex <br />This soil complex occurs on north- and east-facing slopes with the conifer-dominated <br />woodland vegetation community type. Soils in the Grenadier Series occur on colluvium <br />from trachyte or phonolite and are deep and loamy. Soils in the Unnamed Series are <br />derived from colluvium over fragments of ice-scoured trachydolerite, breccia, phonolite, <br />and latite-phonolite, and are shallower and sandier than soils in the Grenadier Series. <br />3.1.2 Quander-Varden Complex <br />These soils are found on mountainsides and fan terraces with the natural grassland <br />vegetation community type. Generally, the slopes are west- or south-facing. The parent <br />materials are colluvium and alluvium derived from trachyte and phonolites. Quander <br />soils are typically found on middle to lower slopes, while the Varden soils occupy the <br />upper slope. The Quander soils are sandy and the Varden soils are more loamy. Both <br />of these soils are deep, with a very thick sub-soil layer composed almost exclusively of <br />cobble-sized, angular rock fragments, often with little soil between fragments. <br />3.1.3 Rogert Soils <br />The Rogert soil has been divided into three sub-units based on inclusions and soil <br />texture. The Rogert with rock outcrops sub-unit is found on steep mountainsides and <br />consists of rock cliffs and outcrops mixed with Rogert Soils. The parent material is <br />residuum from gneiss, granite, monzonite, or granodiorite.
