• Baseline Technical
Report
ARCADIS
Report for Soils and
Biological Resources,
Cresson Mine Life Extension
Project Area
occurrences and patches of pure lodgepole pine are not uncommon, as well as mixed
conifer/quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) stands. Xeric species may include
common juniper (Juniperus communis), twinflower (Linnaea borealis), or holly-grape
(Mahonia repens). Mesic understory shrubs may include Rhododendron albiflorum,
serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), raspberry (Rubus parviflorus), and willow species
(Salix spp). Herbaceous species include Colorado thistle (Cirsium scariosum), fringed
sage (Artemisia frigida), yarrow (Achillea lanulosa), and cinquefoil (Potentilla ovina).
4.1.5 Natural Grassland
These grasslands have a species composition and density that has not been
substantially changed as a result of disturbance. It occurs on gentle slopes with a
southern exposure. Dominant species include Parry's oatgrass (Danthonia parryi),
junegrass (Koelaria macrantha), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), mountain muhly
(Muhlenbergia Montana), squirreltail (Elymus elymoides), western wheatgrass
• (Pascopyron smithi?), bearded wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus ssp trachycaulus),
and Arizona fescue (Festuca arizonica). Grassy slope sedge (Carex oreocharis) occurs
in this vegetation community type on granitic soils between the elevations of 7,500 and
11,800 feet above mean sea level (amsl). Noxious weeds are generally not present.
4.1.6 Disturbed Grassland
These grasslands have been disturbed in historical times (primarily as a result of older
mining activities). This type also occurs on gentle slopes with a southern exposure.
The composition, density, and cover of vegetation have been substantially altered.
Dominant species include Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), western wheatgrass
(Pascopyrum smithi?), squirreltail (Elymus elymoides), redtop (Agrostis stolonifera),
junegrass (Koelaria macrantha), green needlegrass (Nassella viridula), Arizona fescue
(Festuca arizonica), and smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis). Several noxious weed
species may be present.
4.1.7 Riparian Woodland
Dominant tree species include subalpine fir (Abies bifolia), Englemann spruce (Picea
engelmanni?), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesi?), Colorado blue spruce (Picea
pungens), quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), and Rocky Mountain juniper
(Juniperus scopulorum). Other trees that may be present include alder (Alnus
• incana), white fir (Abies concolor), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), cottonwood
CCV Final Technical Report (3-28-08).doc 11
