• 5.5 Loading and Hauling
After blasting and assaying, ore and overburden are designated in the field by the ore-
grade control (mine) geologists. The blasted rock is loaded into haul trucks using either
rubber tired, front-end loaders or track mounted hydraulic shovels. The ore will be hauled
to the existing crusher facility or directly to the VLF as run-of-mine material. The
crushing facilities are discussed in detail in Section 5.6 below.
Overburden material is hauled from the mines to one of two storage areas (the SGOSA or
the ECOSA) or hauled as backfill into one of the surface mine areas of Main Cresson,
East Cresson, or North Cresson Mines. Backfilling will occur in areas where mining
activities allow, usually following the completion of the mining activities. Overburden
placement is discussed in detail in Section 5.7 below. Backfill of mine areas is discussed
in Section 5.7.4.
Subgrade preparation for the Phase 5 VLF or other facilities could also encounter
overburden and underground mine development rock that must be moved to achieve
grade and appropriate foundation conditions. In addition, overburden placed in the
SGOSA in areas of the North Cresson will be relocated to allow mining of the Schist
• Island and remining of the Globe Hill portion of the North Cresson. This material will be
loaded and hauled in a similar manner to ore and overburden. If ore-grade material is so
encountered, it will be hauled to the crusher or placed directly on the VLF. All non-ore
materials will be hauled to one of the overburden storage areas or backfilled.
5.6 Crushing and Conveying
5.6.1 Crushing Facility
The existing crushing circuit located adjacent to the VLF will be operated as
currently approved in Amendment No. 8. Production rates from the crusher
complex are currently permitted up to a capacity of 25 million tons per year. On
average, 23 million tons of ore per year are processed through the primary and
secondary crushers. The remaining ore is placed on the VLF as run-of-mine ore.
The ore from the mine areas is hauled directly to the dump pocket of the primary
gyratory crusher or temporarily placed in a nearby ore stockpile. A loader is used
to maintain the crusher dump pocket area and to feed the dump pocket from the
temporary stockpile when necessary. The truck dump pocket is enclosed on all
sides and is equipped with a water spray system for dust control.
• Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
5-13
