• MLE and a discussion of relocation of growth medium stockpiles required to
allow planned mining and overburden placement under the MLE.
The area in which mining activities will occur will be cleared of trees and shrubs
through logging, removal for transplanting and through the use of dozers. Large
trees remaining following logging will be salvaged and made available for
firewood to employees. Trees may be made available for transplanting and for
Christmas trees to the general public. Smaller trees, shrubs and understory growth
will then be removed with dozers.
Growth medium is generally described as any soil type that has appropriate
qualities necessary to support vegetation. As previously mentioned, much of the
proposed MLE area has been historically mined and there are limited soil
resources available in this area. Well-developed growth medium generally is not
present in the MLE areas. Hence, soils that have roots present, or appropriate
textured unconsolidated materials will be also salvaged and stockpiled for later
use in reclamation as growth medium. CC&V will salvage growth medium
reasonably available in all areas to be disturbed for later use in reclamation.
• Where present in adequate thickness and area (greater than six inches in depth
over an area of at least one acre in size), soils will be removed and stockpiled or
direct hauled to reclamation sites. It is estimated, based on the soils information
described in Section 4.7 of this Project Description, there are about 260,000 cubic
yards ("yd 3,,) of potentially suitable soil in the area of the MLE development that
may be available for salvage. Past experience has shown that actual site
conditions may vary from those mapped due to, among other matters, historic
disturbance, soil depth and rock outcroppngs. The material available under the
MLE is in addition to the approximately 2 million yd3 of soil that have been
identified for recovery and/or stockpiled as part of previous approved operations
associated with Permit M-1980-244.
Growth medium stockpiles have been designated adjacent to the development
area. In some cases, previously constructed stockpiles will need to be relocated to
accommodate development of the MLE. The growth medium stockpiles are
shown on Drawing C-4b. Drawing C-4b shows whether the growth medium
stockpile is existing, new or scheduled for relocation. The current growth medium
stockpiles along with a listing of their estimated capacity and whether or the
CJ
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
5-6
