•
CDOW typically has commented, during previous reviews of mine operations plans, that
a continuation of mining activities and other processing-related disturbances would be
expected to have a minimal impact on wildlife. CC&V has worked and will continue to
work with the CDOW to improve post-mining wildlife habitat.
4.7.1 State and Federal Threatened, Endangered, and Candidate Species
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service was contacted in June 2007 to determine
which threatened, endangered, proposed, and candidate species may be present
within the permit boundary and vicinity. The list included bald eagle, Mexican
spotted owl, least tern, piping plover, whooping crane, pallid sturgeon, Pawnee
montane skipper, and Preble's meadow jumping mouse. CDOW was also
contacted and provided a list that included the bald eagle, Mexican spotted owl,
least tern, piping, plover, whooping crane, and Preble's meadow jumping mouse.
The bald eagle was removed from the Federal threatened and endangered species
list in June 2007. None of the other listed species is expected to use the area of the
Cresson Project. Appendix 3 in Volume III of this document provides complete
details.
• 4.8 Soils
Previous soil surveys were conducted within the permit area by Nerco Minerals Company
in 1984; Newport Minerals in 1985; USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
("NRCS") in 1993 and 1995; JBR Environmental Consultants in 1996; and Greystone
Environmental. Consultants in 1999. Information from these soil studies was consolidated
and updated by Arcadis in 2007 using new NRCS soil units and field survey data
collected in June 2007. A complete discussion of the evaluation of soil resources within
the study area can be found in Baseline Technical Report for Soils and Biological
Resources, located in Appendix 3 of Volume III of this document. The results are
summarized below.
Early soil studies identified three different soil types (Grenadier-like-Unnamed very
gravelly loam complex, Quander-Varden complex, and Rogert very gravelly sandy
loam). In addition to the named soil groups, other soils or characteristic surface features
were mapped in the area. These include mined or disturbed areas, wetland soils,
floodplain soils, eroded or flooded soils, and rock outcrops.
• Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
4-17
