• 4.0 PHYSICAL BACKGROUND
Much of the information presented in this section has not changed from previously
approved documents, however, that information is provided in this section for ease of
review. Information that is collected on a regular basis such as climatic data and surface
and ground water quality data has been updated to provide recent information. Previous
studies for vegetation, soils and wildlife have been field verified to confirm the validity
of the past documentation.
4.1 Location
The Cresson Project area is located southwest of Pikes Peak in southern Teller County,
Colorado. The center of the permit area lies approximately 2 miles southeast of Cripple
Creek, Colorado and approximately 1 1/4 miles north of Victor, Colorado although the
permit boundary lies closer to both towns. The mine area lies entirely within the District.
Under the MLE the total acreage encompassed within the Cresson Project permit
boundary will remain at 5847 acres, the same as that approved under Amendment No. 8
and subsequent permit revisions, although several inholdings have been acquired and the
• northern permit boundary has changed slightly in the Grassy Valley area. An additional
15.4 acres is included for the Carlton Tunnel sediment pond area. The permit boundary
lies exterior to the area of planned disturbance in all cases, both as currently approved
and as planned for the MLE. Exhibit A of this application contains the legal description
for the Cresson Project MLE permit area down to the quarter quarter section.
The changes in the Cresson Project permit boundary proposed as part of the MLE, as well
as the currently approved areas, all lie within the District, that is, within the general area
that has been mined since the late 1800s. The operations are conducted entirely on
privately-owned lands, with both the surface and minerals held in private ownership.
Land ownership is presented on Drawing C-1 and listed in Exhibit O. CC&V's legal right
to enter these privately-owned lands is outlined in Exhibit N. The permit area includes a
section of state-owned land administered by the State Land Board. No disturbance is
planned for the State owned land.
The site is accessible from State Highway 67 as it runs between the cities of Cripple
Creek and Victor and from Teller County Road 82.
•
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension
4-1
