DRMS had expressed concern that WFC was irrigating the dry pasture
excessively and for too long, and recommended that consideration be given to
irrigation at lighter rates during the first or possibly first and second growing
season only, if at all. It appears that WFC has decided to forego irrigation of the
dryland entirely (narrative regarding the 3 years with water cannon was deleted
from the text in the latest version of the revision). However, there is still one
passing reference to irrigation of the dryland for establishment only, which will
need to be clarified (it may be an erroneous remnant). If WFC has elected to
eliminate initial irrigation of dryland reclamation, this should be clarified in the
permit application. Also, since WFC designates a post-mining land use of
irrigated crop and irrigated pasture in some portions of the disturbed areas, costs
for irrigating those areas will be included in the reclamation cost estimate.
5. A revised reclamation cost estimate will be provided under separate cover.
Let me know if you and/or the operator have questions or need additional information.
cc: Sandy Brown
Marcia Talvitie
2
