Dear Ron:
AMEC Earth and Environmental (AMEC) has prepared this response to the Request for Information (RFI)
No. 090601 -A-CCV-R001 5 submitted by Ames Construction on 8 April, 2009. The subject RFI requests a
change in the Phase 5 Valley Leach Facility (VLF) specifications on the Plasticity Index (PI) of aggregate
materials. The change is requested to better match the characteristics of the borrow source.
AMEC has reviewed the material specifications for the Phase 5 VLF, and agrees that the PI can be
modified for some of the aggregate materials. The following summarizes the acceptable changes to the
PI specifications:
Fine Shaft Backfill (FSB):
o Original PI specification: 5 maximum
o Revised PI specification: 15 maximum
Pipe Bedding
o Original PI specification: 5 maximum
o Revised PI specification: 15 maximum
Granular Filter
o Original PI specification: 5 maximum
o Revised PI specification: 15 maximum
It is AMEC's opinion that these changes to the PI specifications will not have any significant affect on the
performance of these materials in the Phase 5 VLF design. If you have any questions or comments,
