j? OFFICE of ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
December 4, 2007
Michael P. Boulay
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: New Horizon Mine (Permit No. C-1981-008)
Permit Renewal Application No. 5 (RN-5) (CHS# 51448)
Dear Mr. Boulay:
RECEIVED
'EC '10 2007
Division w hadamaEon,
Mining and Safety
Thank you for your correspondence dated November 28, 2007 (received by our office on
December 3) regarding the surface coal mining operation referenced above-
While your correspondence indicates that this renewal of the current permit will not result in
any new disturbed acreage nor would it incorporate additional lands into the permit, we are
unable to determine the potential effect of the permit renewal on historic properties because
the extent and location of the current permit area for the New Horizon #2 mine is not clear.
The most recent map of the permit area in our files dates to 1999. Please submit for our review
a map indicating the extent of the New Horizon #2 mine permit area. For our purposes, the
appropriate portion of a clearly identified 7.5 minute USGS topographic map is most useful,
but any map indicating the extent of the permit area with regard to section boundaries will
suffice.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment, If we may be of further assistance please contact
Greg Wolff, Section 106 Compliance Coordinator, at (303) 866-4674.
Sincerely,
Georgianna Contiguglia
State Historic Preservation Officer
GC/GAW
1300 BROADWAY DENVER COLORADO 80203 TEL 303/866-3395 FAx 303/866-2711 wwwcoloradohistory-oahp.org
