Box 667
Nucla, Colorado 81424 (
December, 28 2007
AM 0 3
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety pia; , ;„z -,? acv
1313 Sherman Street Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Technical Revision to the New Horizon Mine permit no. C-81-008 by Western
Fuels-Colorado (WFC) in Nucla, Colorado.
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter as a formal protest to the application for a Technical
Revision to the New Horizon Mine Permit No. C-81-008 Section 2.05.4(2)e. This
Technical revision covers the change in Success Standards in Irrigated pasture from a
standard to a reference area.
I, along with numerous others whose livelihoods include ranching, feel that these
revisions will severely affect our income and way of life. We have done business with
the Morgan Ranch for 25 years, and over that span of time, have purchased many
hundreds of tons of alfalfa hay. They have proved time and again to be a reliable source
of hay for our cattle every winter.
The forage they provide us with is very high in protein, and is some of the only
straight alfalfa that I know of in the area. As you may have noticed, hay is becoming
harder and harder to come buy at a decent price in this area. In fact, we can't seem to
find enough, and consequentially end up paying to have it shipped in from out of state.
By revising the New Horizon Mine permit you are not only affecting all the
property owners involved-but in fact the whole valley and anyone who has relied upon
this source of hay in previous years.
Sincerely, ?
/' d,? a - 4A:io/f
Gordon Smith
