The Mine remains in Temporary
Cessation, and the only new disturbance or reclamation completed during 2008 was development of the
permitted (TR07-34) solid waste disposal site, demolition of selected facilities and reclamation of the
associated disturbance areas, disposal of the demolition wastes, and reclamation of a portion of the solid
waste disposal area. Site maintenance and monitoring activities continued, as in previous years, under the
Temporary Cessation status.
BTU Empire Corporation (BTUEC) developed the eastern portion of the permitted solid waste disposal
facility, within the previously disturbed No. 9 Portal area. Development involved maintenance of the
existing light-use road, minor maintenance of existing drainage structures, and excavation of a portion of
the permitted disposal area, with placement of the excavated material adjacent to the excavation to serve
as cover and final fill. BTUEC contracted an asbestos survey of all facilities identified for potential
demolition as part of the pemaitting effort for facilities demolition. The survey identified minor
occurrences of Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM) in the No. 9 Warehouse, Oakey Plaza,
Laboratory Trailer, and Bathhouse. BTUEC subsequently contracted with a licensed asbestos removal
firm for removal and proper disposal of all ACBM's. Following ACBM removal, BTUEC completed
demolition of the following facilities:
? No. 9 Warehouse
? Oakey Plaza (Reclamation Storage Building)
? Brazell-Simms Building (Partially collapsed by windstorm about two years prior to final
demolition)
? Laboratory Trailer
? Storage Shed (Lab Sample Storage Building)
? Bathhouse
?
