•
DRMS MINE WATER SAMPLING PROGRAM: SAMPLE LOCATIONS AND
PROTOCOL
Barrett Lavergne
Bowie Resources LLC
Introduction:
The purpose of the DRMS Mine Water Sampling Program is to collect water
inflow from multiple locations for certain parameter analysis to determine if the Bowie
No. 2 Mine will impact the surface or subsurface water. Compliance with the
Hydrologic Monitoring Plan 2.05.6 of the Permit Application Coal Mining In Colorado,
Volume I Text, is determined by monitoring springs of water flow of 5 gallons or more
per minute, in or adjacent to the permit area. Monitoring these springs annually, allows
for field testing and lab parameter testing at each monitoring site. Annual monitoring
facilitates the identification of the impact, if any, the mine is having on the balance of the
hydrologic cycle. The parameters included in the lab testing are included in Surface
Water List 1.
Locations:
The sample locations picked for the annual monitoring sites were decided based
on simple geologic conditions. Consistent water inflow trends in Bowie No. 2 mine have
been seen near normal faults, reverse faults, strike-slip faults, open joints, roof bolts,
and/or lithology drill holes. Steady water flows have been observed throughout the mine
near the D5 fault that connects from the Northeast Sub-mains to the 2nd North Mains.
These observations were determining factors in the locations of monitoring sites 1-4.
Observations:
??
Monitoring site No. 1 is located in cross cut 1 of the 1st" Last Mains in entry No.
2 (see Sample Location J.). This sample location was picked due to lower elevation than
surrounding entry ways, which allows for the water that drips from open crack:s and joints
to be guided along gutters and drip pans to the sample location. There is clearly an
abundant amount of water being guided to this location, evident by the pooling; of water
in the nearby sump. The general conditions observed from the sample taken on 7/16/08
at 10:30 were that of a clear water sample with a small variety of suspended sediment.
The field parameter tests demonstrated slightly basic water with a pH of 8.5 and a
conductivity of 5.3 mS/cm. The flow rate estimate from this specific sample location was
a steady and consistent rate of approximately 1/a a gallon per minute. The entry way
decline from each direction at this low spot, allows for the possibility of multiple sample
inflows. The combination of the multiple sample inflows would have a greater flow rate
estimate into the nearby sump than a single sample inflow.
Monitoring Site No. 2 was picked due to the location near the D5 fault in the
North-Last Sub-Mains in cross cut No. 4, entry 2 (see Sample Location 2). The location
of the Monitoring Site No.2 sample was taken from the flow of water out of the end of a
pipe that was being guided into a sump. The source of the water is most likely dripping
from open cracks and joints and also water being pumped out of entry ways. A water
pump was identified in the beltline pumping groundwater to pipe connected to the
Monitoring Site No. 2 sample location. The sample taken from this location on 7/16/08
at 10:50 had a clear color with lots of black, coal like, sediment. The field tested pl-I
