I
CashMineWaterMonitoring AddanBrown
' 2.7 Mining
The Cash Mine is an underground gold mine that currently extends to a depth of 668 feet below ground
level. The mine has been developed on nine levels, at an average vertical spacing of approximately 70
' feet.
Development of the mine to date has been along two ore-bearing veins: the Cash Vein, and the Freiburg
Vein. These veins are sub-vertical, trending approximately NE-SW, and they converge at the eastern end
of the mine. Sections along each of these veins are presented in Plate 5.
Mining has been performed in general by the overhand cut and fill method. The vein orebody is removed
' by blasting the back and face, and the void created is backfilled with waste to form the platform for
further extraction. Where there is insufficient waste for backfilling, the stopes were left open.
The proposed mining at the site will continue this mining strategy, possibly utilizing cemented paste
backf ill for stope filling.
1 3. MONITORING PLAN
3.1 Basis
' The monitoring plan is proposed to identify the quality of surface water and groundwater at the Cash
Mine before, during, and after the currently-proposed operation. The purpose of monitoring at the site is
' to identify any impact to water resources occasioned by the construction, operation, and closure of the
mine.
3.2 Surface Water
3.2.1 Monitoring Locations
' Surface water will be monitored at two locations downstream from the Cash Gulch mine:
3.2.1.1 Cash Gulch
Cash Gulch will be monitored at SW-1 (Plate 4). This location is below the mine workings, both surface
and underground, and accessible by road. At this location Cash Gulch is generally damp or dry, with
' flow in and after precipitation or snowmelt events. A permanent marker will be erected at the sampling
location, comprising a cairn or post beside the gulch, sufficiently above the stream thalweg to be above
flood flow level.
3.2.1.2 Unnamed Gulch
The unnamed gulch to the east of Cash Mine will be monitored at SW-2 (Plate 4). This location is below
' the mine workings, but above the southern mine access road and above the County Road. Both of these
roads have the potential to impact the water quality with sediment and snow control materials. At the
sampling location the unnamed gulch is generally dry. A permanent marker will be erected at the
sampling location, comprising a cairn or post beside the gulch, sufficiently above the stream thalweg to
be above flood flow level.
11
1601A-20061106 3
