MountRoyaleVenturesCashMineHydrology AdrianBrown
5.2 IVIRV Response
5.2.1 Hydraulic Seal
Hydraulic sealing of the Cash Mine following completion of mining will be achieved as follows:
1. Installation of a single mine seal in the Mount Royale Adit No 1 (#3 Level) at a distance of
approximately 300 feet from the. portal (Figure 3). The mine seal will generally conform to the
design of Allan Sorenson, of DRMS.
2. Performance of supplemental measures to eliminate surface seepage from the sealed mine, if
necessary, including formation or contact grouting, or backfilling of mine portal areas.
5.2.2 Groundwater Conditions after Closure
Following closure, the mine water level will recharge to an elevation estimated to be equal to the
elevation of the #3 Level. The maximum outflow from the mine after closure and re-equilibration of
water level in the mine can be computed from the current mine inflow, as follows:
Current maximum mine inflow: 1.56 gpm
Current drawdown at mine: 350 feet
Maximum post-closure drawdown (to #1 Level): 115 feet
Projected max post-closure seepage: 0.5 gpm
This result is supported by the modeling results, which predicts a maximum seepage from the entire
mine of 0.6 gpm. Based on this projection, there will be no point source discharge visible through the
reclaimed mine portals, and any seepage will be dispersed over the plug and the portal area to support
plant growth and groundwater recharge. No point source discharge will occur, and no NPDES discharge
permit will be required.
6. ZERO DISCHARGE, UIC CONSIDERATIONS
6.1 DRMS Request
6. 3.3 EXHIBIT C - Mining Plan, Section 17. Re: Zero discharge status and UIC permit considerations.
The Division respects the position of MRV on the need for an EPA -UIC Permit in order to conduct the
proposed mining operations. Ultimately, the need (or lack of need) for an EPA-UIC Permit should be
left to the discretion of the EPA. The Division will be forwarding MR V's proposed mining activities to
the EPA for their determination.
6.2 MRV Response
6.2.1 Zero Discharge
The current Cash Mine plan contemplates zero discharge of mine water. All water obtained from
dewatering the mine will be either used in the mining operation (including backfilling), or pumped to the
tailings pond for use in milling.
1601A-20060911 6
