' Water level in TP-W1 has fluctuated since its completion
(table 2.04.7(1)-2). Three days after completion, the water
level stood-at 68'6" below the top of the PVC casing. A month
later, the water level was at 70' 9 1/4" just before the well was
evacuated using the airlift technique with N2 cylinders. After
overnight recovery, the water level rose 5 feet to a level of 65'
9 1/4%
The monitor well confirms the existence of a confined aquifer
just below the coal seam to be mined. The aquifer is laterally
extensive throughout the project area and it most likely extends
to the southeast of the area as far as the Caldirola No. 2 !line
where it contributes to the water reservoir in the mine. The
sustained yield of 6 gpm reported for the mine shaft well (United
Western Engineering, 1974) can thus be taken as the upper limit
for the sandstone aquifer at TP-W1. During the cleaning
operation of the open hole, discharge rate was estimated at not
. more than 2 gpm.
Recharge to the aquifer is mainly along the outcrops of the
sandstone bed to the northwest, east and southeast of the project
area. In the absence of another monitor hole completed in the
same aquifer as TP-W1 to determine direction of slope of the
ground-water table, it can only be assumed that flow direction is
towards the axis of the Chandler Syncline. Vertical movement is
unlikely because of the impervious shale beds that dominate the
sequence above the aquifer.
Monitor well TP-W1 was sampled twice within a month's
interval for water quality analyses. Values under TP-GW-1 in
table 2.04.7(1)-3 refer to these samples. The first sample was
taken following the completion of the well after over 30 gallons
of water had been bailed out using 1 1/2" by 4' bailer. The
second sample was taken after approximately three times the
volume of well storage had been evacuated using airlift pumping.
Sample waters were obtained using the bailer in both instances.
JFSA-38
