' strata is higher than the difference in the carbonate -
bicarbonate content, thus making sulfur the determining factor in
the pH values.
The anomalous values in the roof and floor strata are not all
reflected in the surface and ground waters analyzed. Iron is the
only one showing near-consistent high values. Lead and manganese
are high only in the ground-water samples from the monitor well
(TP-GW-1).
The water of the monitor well can be characterized as a
sodium bicarbonate water. The jump of calcium content from 8.6
mg/l in the first sample to 780 mg/l in the second is
unexplained.
It is interesting to note that the Caldirola No. 2 Mine shaft
water shows no anomalous values in the parameters reported high
. for TP-W1 (tables 2.04.7(1)-6 and 2.04.7(1)-7). The same is true
of water quality data from monitor wells completed in upper
Vermejo Formation about 4 miles south of the project area. Data
from 14 months monitoring for 2 wells is shown in table
2. 04. 7( 1 )-8. Of the anomalous parameters for TP-Wl only TDS is
similarly above EPA standard in these monitor wells. This
suggests that exposure of the ground water to the strata exposed
in the underground mines in the past has produced little adverse
impact in the water quality.
40
JFSA-42
