Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has received a revision for the West Elk Mine. The
revision was called complete on April 6, 2009. The decision due date is April 16, 2009.
The mine operator proposes to drill 17 coal exploration holes inside the existing mine permit area in the
Dry Fork area and on Lions Mesa. Twelve of the holes will be on USFS land at locations that have
previously been approved for drilling disturbance; eleven of these will eventually be converted to methane
drainage wells that were previously approved in PR-14. Five of the holes will be on private land and will
not be converted to methane drainage wells. Proposed total new disturbance in the 17,155-acre permit
area is 1.9 acres.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
T'j".", /C C-,.-
Tom Kaldenbach
Environmental Protection Specialist
TAK/Ahd
m:\oss\ahd\temp\c-ci-01 _c 1980007_tak_04062009022322.doc
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
