•
2006 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 4-17)
COVER
(Table 4)
Native perennial cool season grasses were the predominant lifeform observed in the 2006
Reclaimed Area, contributing 12.5 percent first-hit vegetation cover. Of this, 5.9 percent cover
was western wheat grass and 2.1 percent was thickspike wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus fm.
dasystachya). Introduced perennial cool season grasses contributed 6.9 percent first-hit
vegetation cover, composed mostly of intermediate wheat grass (Thinopyrum intermedium) (2.9
percent). Introduced annual grasses contributed 3.9 percent first-hit vegetation cover. This total
was composed of five species, including cheat grass (Anisantha tectorum) (1.6 percent), bulbous
bluegrass (Poa bulboua) (1.56 percent) and Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus) (0.7 percent).
Also observed in the area were bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare), houndstongue (Cynoglossum
officinale) and Canada thistle (Breea arvensis).
r?
I?
Total average vegetation cover for first hits was 33.6 percent. For herbaceous vegetation, total
average cover for first hits was 32.5 percent. Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil and rock
averaged .9, 22.9, 34.1 and 8.4 percent, respectively. Average species density was 32.7 species
per 100 sq. m.
PRODUCTION
(Table 5)
Total herbaceous production in 2008 was 1,140.2 pounds per acre. Of this, 619.2 pounds were
native perennial cool season grasses, 269.4 were introduced perennial cool season grasses and
121.3 were introduced perennial forbs. Four other lifeforms were present at less than 70 pounds
per acre.
WOODY PLANT DENSITY
(Table 6)
Total average woody plant density in the 2006 Reclaimed Area was 275.2 stems per acre.
. Mountain snowberry was the densest at 108.9 stems per acre. Wood's rose contributed 101.2
10
