5~
4.2.7 Surface Water Monitoring Program
A water quality monitoring program has been established to monitor the effect of mining
activities. Portions of this monitoring program, as well as the groundwater monitoring program,
described in Section 4.2.4 will cover both the Munger Canyon and McClane Canyon mines
which operate in close proximity to one another in the same major watershed. Locations of all
surface water monitoring sites are shown on Figure 4.2-2.
The quantity of flow at SW-1 and SW-8 will be measured quarterly, contingent upon the
r 1
L J
I•
availability of water. In response to a request made by the Division to begin monitoring flow at
SW-8, the location of SW-8 has been relocated to the bridge at Munger Road effective June
1996. The operator has examined the creek channel closer to the south end of the permit area
for location to monitor flow. No good locations were found. Agricultural activities for water
diversion make establishment of a sample station impossible without recalibration of the site
continually. Flow rating charts for both bridges have been developed to ensure consistence of
flow measurements. Flow measurements will also be taken at SW-2, in McClane Creek below
the mine site. The measurements will ideally betaken twice a year if water is available to
sample. Measurements will be taken once during spring snow melt and once during a storm
event. Flow rating charts for both East Salt Creek and for the culvert at SW-2 are presented as
Table 4.2-14.
Water quality samples of East Salt Creek will be collected quarterly. Water quality will
be monitored at sites SW-1 and SW-8 as shown on Figure 4.2-2. Water quality samples will
also be taken at sites SW-2 and SW-5 twice a year; once during spring snow melt and once
during a storm event (spring or summer). Table 4.2-13 shows the results of the April 1981
laboratory analyses from East Salt Creek monitoring locations SW-1 and SW-4 which are
indicated on Figure 4.2-2. All water samples will be analyzed for parameters as noted in Table
4.2-15. The results of the quarterly monitoring will be submitted to the Regulatory Authority
during the month following the end of that quarter. Results of additional monitoring will be
submitted to the Division in an annual hydrological report. The annual report will detail the
parameters as note in Table 4.2-15 and shall be structured around the normal "water year"
(October 1 through September 30). The annual report will also include baseline water quality
data in addition to the quarterly monitoring data to allow for comparison of baseline and "during
mining" conditions. The annual report for the previous water year will be submitted no later
4-20
than March 31 of each year.
M`Clane
Volume 1
(Rev 5/04)
