4- 13
Small springs or seeps of alkaline water were located from the outcrop of the Cameo Coal
• Zone in Section 27, T 8 S, R 101 W, and near the creek in section 22 of the same township and
range. A series of springs occurs along the toe of a Rollins Sandstone slope in T 1 N, R 1 E .
A group of springs near Atchee was used in the past by the Uintah Railway.
From the study of published materials (Erdman, 1934) and U. S. Bureau of Mines files for
the Bookcliff Coal Field, it is obvious that in only one mine has ground water caused a problem
for mining. Flooding by ground water has caused the abandonment of the Anchor No. 1 mine in
Section 27, T 8 S, R 101 W. In the Bunniger Mine (Sections 1 & 2, T 8 S, R 102 W) some water
was encountered at the working faces in the Carbonera Seam during a USBM inspection in
1925. These mine workings were evidently beneath the Dry Salt Wash.
All Other mines in the Bookcliffs Coal Field seem to be dry, very probably because most of
them have been developed above the local stream beds.
4.2.2 Site Hydrology
The McClane Canyon site lies at the east side of East Salt Creek, which is tributary to the
• Colorado River. East Salt Creek ceases to flow through the permit area in the spring and is dry
until snow melt occurs the next season. McClane Canyon also contains an ephemeral drainage
which is normally dry. The drainage area contains steep and poorly vegetated slopes and, with
the exception of the period of snow melt, the only flow of water through McClane Canyon is
immediately subsequent to rainstorms. This flow is usually brief in duration. It is evident from
the site reconnaissance that the general area is subject to flash flooding, capable of canying
particles ranging from pebbles to boulders.
The data about groundwater presence on the site were obtained from direct observations
on the surface, during underground exploration operations and from the results of exploration
boreholes. About 70 boreholes were drilled in the permit area and adjacent areas.

M~ Volume 1 4 ~ 29 - 96
