4~1
• 4.0 . DESCRIPTION OF LAND
4.1 LAND USE
4.1.1 REGIONAL LAND USE
Beef Production and associated agricultural land uses seem to be the predominant land use
in this portion of western Garfield County. There is also a recreational value associated with the
wildlife habitat evident in this portion of the county. The value would be in the form of hunting
and trapping potential.
The permit area; as well as, the general area of the six block lease tract, is not within an
area designated as unsuitable for underground mining under 30 CFR 764 or 765, or within an
area under study for such designation.
4.1.2 SITE LAND USE
Discussions regarding the permit and mine plan are segregated into three categories;
historical, present, and future land use.
• 4.1.2.1 Historic Land Use
Historical land use within the permit and mine plan areas has been consistent with the
regional land uses. Grazing has been the primary domestic use of the lands within the mine plan
area with unknown degrees of success. Most of the acreage within the mine plan area could
only have been associated with wildlife habitat due to considerations of topographic restrictions,
water availability and vegetation.
The remaining portion of the area would have been utilized as rangeland, with only a small
portion aimed at associated agriculture due to the absence of water and a suitable growth
media. The majority of this area would be considered as undeveloped rangeland. A portion of
the area exhibits some past overgrazing which has discouraged the return of desirable species.
•
IVIo Volume 1 4 ~ 29 ~ 96
