_2-
• the unground material which indicates a low water holding potential.
The less than 1 mm fraction would have a much greater water holding
potential as indicated by the relatively fine texture. The percent
organic matter is relatively high, probably due to the abundance of
coal in the material.
The pH of the samples is high when compared to agricultural soil,
and sample number 2 has a pH sufficiently high so as to restrict
the growth of plant roots into the material. Salt content is low as
evidencedby low electrical conductivities. The sodium adsorption ratios
(SAR) of the samples are high, although there are not sufficient
concentrations of sodium to warrant a hazard.
Essentially no nitrate- nitrogen was detected; however, phosphorus
and potassium are present in quantities sufficient to support plant
growth. Relatively low concentrations of iron, manganese, copper
and zinc were found with the exception of the iron content in sample
number 2.
No hazards are presentedby the extremely low concentrations of
heavy metals in the samples.
Conclusions
The samples as tested indicate a relatively low potential for
pollutant hazards. The somewhat higher concentrations of chemical
constituents in sample number 2 may be the result of a small pocket
of more concentrated elements found in that particular geologic stratum.
•
