;vi .h resoect to the essential hydrologic function of subirri-
gation,_= is believed that following reclamation and abandonment
of the UTL Site (including removal of the coal storage vile and
sedimentation ponds), subirrigation will be restored to pre-
mining conditions and will continue to be largely regulated (both
from a quantity and quality perspective) by the nearby Colorado
River. It should be emphasized that no mining ep r S2 will
occur in the UTL Site area, and all disturbances are limited to
the immediate land surface. Any quality changes in the shallow
ground water system resulting from operation of the UTL will be
of short duration due to the proximity to the Colorado River and
• the extensive underflow associated with this relatively large
surface waterflow system. In addition, if a ground water quality
problem is detected by the implemented monitoring program,
mitigation measures will be undertaken, as necessary, prior to
abandonment of the Site. With regard to the potential for
elevated ground water levels due to leakage from sedimentation
ponds, it is believed that such levels would dissipate quickly
following removal of the ponds and that the water levels would
return to the pre-disturbance range of elevation (as regulated by
the Colorado River).
Environmental Monitoring
Based on the identified essential hydrologic functions of
• the AVF in the area of the UTL Sit_, a monitoring program has
7
