• <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br />Powderhorn Coal Company requested the services of Rocky Mountain <br />Geotechnical to evaluate the slope stability and the need for <br />drains for the proposed coal waste piles (Cameo Refuse Disposal <br />Area No. 2 and 3) located at the Powderhorn Coal Company near <br />Grand Junction, Colorado. This work involved performing a <br />subsurface soil investigation to determine foundation conditions, <br />laboratory tests involving classification and triaxial shear <br />tests, a slope stability analysis to determine safety factors for <br />the proposed coal waste piles, and the evaluation for the need <br />for drains. This report will summarize these items in detail and <br />make recommendations and conclusions fot the proposed coal waste <br />• piles. <br />1.1 PROJECT LOCATION <br />The site is located approximately 15 miles north an east of the <br />City of Grand Junction, Colorado, to the northwest of the public <br />service power generation plant. The site is approximatley 1 mile <br />to the northeast of the present course of the Colorado River. <br />The site is in the lower portion of a drainage known as Coal <br />Canyon, and is located to the southwest of the bottom of the <br />drainage.
