(e) A diverse, effective, and permanent cover of vegetation of the same seasonal variety
native to the area will be established over all disturbed parts of the affected surface
areas with exception of the following:
Areas of the commercial postmining land use designated as °Active Area" on
Exhibit 6C-A will not be seeded. Also, most of the area described as steep
rock face on Figure 14-14 will not be revegetated due to the very steep
gradient and nature of the material along the slope.
(i) Seeding and planting of disturbed areas will be conducted during the first
normal period of favorable planting conditions following final preparation for
seeding. Seeding will normally be done in the fall from mid October through
mid November for drill seeding and through mid December for hydro or
broadcast seeding. Spring seeding will be done during March or April.
Summer seeding will be done from mid July through August. The seed mix to
be used for an area will generally be determined by the elevation of the area
to be seeded, see page 14-25. Table 14-8 presents the upland and lowland
seed mixes to be used after December 2001. Tables 14-4, 14-6 and 14-9
through 14-13 present the seed mixes used prior to December 2001.
(ii) Species to be planted and amounts of seed per acre are specified in Table
14-3 -Temporary Seed Mixture and Table 14.8 -Permanent Seed Mixes.
Winter wheat, oats or barley at a rate of 20 - 30 IbsJacre may be used as a
temporary cover for dirt work completed between optimum spring and fall
seeding periods.
(iii) The seed mixture(s) will be drilled on level areas and on slopes which will
permit machine work along the contour. On slopes which prevent safe or
adequate machine work, the surface will be hydroseeded or broadcast
seeded. Broadcast seeding will also be used for small isolated areas. Dozer
tracking up and down steep slopes or other roughening techniques will be
used before seeding to establish a better seedbed. On predominantly south
and west facing steep slopes, the surface will be extensively roughened to
provide for increased moisture retention and favorable micro sites for plant
establishment.
(iv) All seeded areas will be mulched with certified weed free grass hay or straw.
Approximately two tons of mulch will be used on each acre seeded.
• PR-3 14-16
(Rev. 06/07)
