Hernandez, Daniel
From: Binns, Janet
Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2009 3:42 PM
To: Hernandez, Daniel
Cc: Brown, Sandy; Stark, Jim; Berry, David
Subject: Eagle Mine complex SL2
Hi Dan,
I was progressing on wrapping up the SL2 for Eagle Mine Complex and revisiting if the Dave's questions had
indeed been addressed by the operator. Your e-mail, dated 2/17/2009, stated that Jerry had told you that there
are hydraulic seals in the No. 5 mine that do seal the No. 5 mine off hydraulically from the No. 6 mine (East of the
Williams Fork River). That was the first I had heard the operator indicate that there were hydraulic seals in the
west side of the mine. I searched through the database to find documentation of these seals. Review of Inflow
Reports 1984, 1985 and 1986 show where underground seals were installed in portions of the mine west of the
Williams Fork (underlying the bond release area). However, since the inflow reports measure flow downdip of the
seals, I cannot say that these seals isolate the mine inflows from the rest of the mine.
I spoke to Jerry Nettleton on 3/4/2009 regarding documentation of the hydraulic seals in the No. 5 mine that would
isolate the underground hydrology underlying the proposed bond release area form the mining areas not
considered for release. Jerry indicated that this would take some research and that he would likely have Joe
Shoemaker or one of the other staff work on this. Jerry indicated that this was not high on his radar screen at the
moment.
So, I will continue to work on this. Once we have documentation of hydraulic seals and how they were installed,
this should resolve our questions of hydraulic communication within the mine workings.
Janet
3/30/2009
