III. COMMENTS-COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (Division). This processing and loadout site has been
inactive since June 2001 after the closure of the Lorencito Mine (#C-96-084). Ground
conditions were generally dry. The area received 6-8 inches of snow since the last
inspection but most had melted off with the exception of the shaded areas.
Hydrologic Balance
No pumping of mine water to Pond 001 was observed during the inspection. The operator
has completed the new borehole and is awaiting installation of a pump prior to beginning
dewatering from this location.
II
New dewatering borehole, New Elk, March 2009
Support Facilities
The operator is putting the final touches on the East Portal fan building. This ventilation
shaft was the original mine dewatering location. Due to the fact that a fan will be operating at
this location, all dewatering from this point forward will be from the new dewatering borehole.
3
