III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Sunlight C-1981-046
Pg 1/1 17 March 2009
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection of the Sunlight Mine conducted by Jim Stark of
CDRMS. The permit for the site has been revoked and the reclamation was
completed by the Division. The weather was warm and sunny and the ground was
either muddy or still covered with several inches of snow.
Signs and Markers: The Division's revoked mine ID site sign was in place and in good
condition at the time of the inspection. This sign is located just below the portal on
the north side of the road (the upper portal).
Backfilling and Grading: - The regraded portal area on the north side of the road (the
upper portal) was stable and appeared to be in good condition. The site was
covered with some snow and the rest of the area was very muddy. There was no
settling or cracking and there was good vegetation on the slope. There were no
erosional problems noted on the portal area.
Slides and Damage: - The portal area on the south side of the road (and below the
road) was basically inaccessible due to snow. It was, however, viewed from above
the road and from a location on the side of the road. The lower portal has had a
small collapse. The wood cribbing appears to have rotted and caused the collapse.
The backfill around the portal appears to be stable, however. It is unknown how
stable this area actually is, as it is directly below the road.
Reclamation Success: - Both the upper and lower portal areas are fairly well
vegetated. The slope of the lower portal area is nearly 1 :1 and the area looks pretty
good. The fairly steep-sloping reclaimed area up to the upper portal is very well
vegetated as is the upper portal area (at least the portion not covered with snow).
This completes the 17 March 2009 inspection of the Sunlight Mine.
