SL- Z
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF RECLAMATION, MINING AND SAFETY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
March 24, 2009
Mr. Jeff Boleski '
25509 West Warren Ave.
Dearborn Heights, MI 48127
Re: Twin Pines Coal Mine, #C-83-058
Dear Mr. Boleski:
COLORADO
D I V I S I ON OF
RECLAMATION
MINING
SAFETY
Bill Ritter, Jr.
Governor
Harris D. Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (Division) is close to wrapping up the process of
termination of jurisdiction at the Twin Pines Mine Site.
As you may recall, based on your request, we left the sediment ponds as permanent structures to
provide water retention for livestock and wildlife water. One pond is located on the mine bench at the
portal site and one pond is located at the coal sales yard.
Recently we realized that water monitoring well TPW-1 also exists in SE 1/4 SE1/4 Section 2, T20S
R70W of the Sixth Principle Meridian. We believe this well is on your property. According to well
completion information, the well is 205 feet deep and has a static water level measured in March 2009
of 136 feet 2 inches below the top of the well casing. Given the well total depth and current water
level, a standing water column of about 70 feet exists in this well. It is possible that a solar powered
pump could produce this well at a modest rate for livestock or wildlife water. The water quality
appears to be suitable for this purpose, although quality, and other technical details, would need to be
determined by a qualified person.
Our Rule 4.05.14 allows monitoring wells to be transferred to the surface owner as long as the surface
owner obtains a well permit from the Division of Water Resources and requests the well transfer in
writing to the Division. If you do not want the well to remain, the Division will use available bond
monies to plug and abandon the well. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at your convenience. My direct number is 303-
866-3567 x8121. You can also contact me by email at mailto:kent.2orham(d),state.co.us if you have
any questions. Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
i
Kent Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist III
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
