Two photos of the lands addressed under AR-01 accompany this report. This inspection also
occurred as part the Division's review process of a request to expand the permit area to 9.74 acres (AM-01).
The Mott Gravel Pit is approved for 7.5 acres affected lands for the extraction and processing of construction
materials. The permit area includes pre-permit, and possibly pre-law, mining-related disturbances. Affected lands
will be reclaimed to support general agriculture post-mining land use. The Division holds $4,684 financial warranty.
Inspection Topics Specific to AR-01
The 2.18 acres requested for release under AR-01 appeared to be entirely comprised of slopes of an ancient river
terrace along the east bank of Alkali Creek. The western boundary of the original permit area approached Alkali
Creek and included the terrace slopes. Under AR-01, the Operator desires to relocate the western permit boundary
further east from Alkali Creek, to the crest of the terrace slope. Approximately 70% of the 2.18 acre area appeared
to be undisturbed lands with native Pinion-Juniper (PJ) type vegetative cover and 3H:1V slopes. Cattle trails
traversed the slopes leading to and from Alkali Creek.
Approximately 30% of the 2.18 acre area (0.6 acres) had been mildly disturbed by pre-permit, and possibly pre-law,
activities. The pre-permit disturbance occurred during the time of a previous landowner and appeared to have not
resulted from the permitted operation. Vegetative cover for the disturbed slope was sufficient to control erosion and
included Four Wing Salt Bush, Rubber Rabbitbrush, wheatgrass, Downy Brome, Russian Thistle and Flexweed.
Regulated noxious weeds were not observed. The 2H:1 V slopes appeared stable; no evidence of slumping, sliding
or excessive erosion was observed.
On March 6, 2009, the Division approved AR-01.
Inspection Topics Specific to AM-01
Under AM-01 the Operator desires to add approximately 4.3 acres along the eastern permit boundary, for a total
permit area of 9.7 acres. The 4.3 acre area appeared consistent with the descriptions provided in the application
for AM-01. Permanent man-made structures located within 200 feet of the permit boundary appeared limited to
fence lines on the proposed south and east boundaries, and an irrigation ditch along the proposed east boundary.
There is also a buried water line along the west boundary of the existing permit.
No problems or possible violations were observed.
Please be aware that annual reports always require a map of current site conditions, regardless of whether any
disturbance has occurred during the report year.
Response to this inspection report should be directed to the Division's office in Durango at 691 County Road 233,
Suite A-2, Durango, CO 81301, to the attention of Wally Erickson, phone (970) 247-5469.
