I PROSPECTING MAN10 #OR D #: M-1979-187 I INSPECTION DATE: 08/15/2006 I INSPE ALSR S RMw I
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) monitoring
program. Present at the inspection were Richard Wenzel of the Division and Ron Morrow of Morrow & Sons, Inc.
A sign was posted at the entrance to the site and the permit boundaries were delineated by fences. All mining
operations are occurring within the permit boundaries.
Mining is progressing to the north, northeast and east directions from the southwest corner of the permit area
resulting in a highwail approximately forty to fifty feet in height. Vegetation, topsoil, and overburden are stripped and
stockpiled ahead of the mining operation. Topsoil is also stockpiled in the southeast comer of the permit area and
is well vegetated. There appears to be an adequate amount of topsoil and overburden on site to achieve the
required reclamation.
A wash plant is located in the southwest comer of the permit area near the scale house. Water that drains from the
stockpile of wash fines drains into a series of settling ponds. Stoma water from the entire site also drains to these
ponds, preventing it from leaving the site. At the time of this inspection, the sediment in the settling ponds was
being removed. This material is stockpiled along the southern mining face and will be used for reclamation.
Three fuel storage tanks of various sizes were located near the entrance to the site. None of the tanks appeared to
be equipped with any form of secondary containment. Ron Morrow was informed that secondary containment
would need to be constructed in order to prevent any accidental spills or leaks from contaminating the ground water
system in accordance with the attached Mineral Program Policy Memo. He indicated that as soon as the level of
fuel was low enough to allow him to lift the tanks, he would construct the necessary secondary containment. This
condition is listed as a problem on page three of this report.
An infestation of Scentless Chamomile was observed near the entrance to the pit. A review of the reclamation plan
revealed that the operator has a weed control plan in place. The operator also indicated that the County also has
sprayed the area for noxious weeds. It was recommended to the operator that he implement his weed control plan
in order to help control this noxious weed.
Overall, the pit is neat and well maintained. No other problems were identified during this inspection.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Richard Wenzel at the Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety, Denver Office, 1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, Colorado 84203, phone number 303-866-
4935.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
NAME: Mr. Steve Morrow
OPERATOR: Morrow & Sons, Inc.
STREET: P.
