JOSEPH A. CESARE AND ASSOCIATES, INC., GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS
PURPOSE
This report presents the results of a subsurface investigation for the potential sand and
gravel resources located on the West Farm property in Prowers County, Colorado. The West
Farm property consists of approximately 1,050 acres located east of Lamar, Colorado. The
parcel of interest for this investigation was approximately 240 acres. The parcel is located in
portions of Sections 28 and 33, Township 22 South, Range 46 West. The investigation was
made to determine the extent and quantity of potential aggregate resources on the site. Issues
involving extraction, mining, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, water rights, and
government factors have not been considered and are beyond the scope of this report.
Factual data gathered during the field and laboratory work is summarized in Table 1,
Figures 1 through 17, and Appendices A and B, attached. Our opinions and recommendations
presented in this report are based on the data generated during this field investigation,
laboratory testing, and our experience with similar-type projects.
SITE CONDITIONS
The West Farm Property is bounded by the Arkansas River to the north, U.S. Highway
50 to the south, City of Lamar to the west and open farmland to the east. The Arkansas River
flows within the property boundary, in a general west to east direction, along most of the
northern edge of the property. Elevations range from approximately 3,570 to 3,600 feet, with a
predominant gradient to the east. The Lamar Canal borders the southern edge of the property
and Clay Creek bisects the eastern portion of the site. A vicinity map with area geology is
shown in Figure 1 and a site plan with test hole locations is shown in Figure 2. City of Lamar
sewage lagoons exist in the north-central portions of the property. The property is currently
used as irrigated farmland and non-irrigated pasture for livestock grazing.
There are no bedrock outcrops on the site. The USGS geologic map of Colorado, 1979,
indicates that Quaternary alluvium consisting of sand and gravel overlie Cretaceous sandstone
and shale bedrock. On either side of the Arkansas River Floodplain, the bedrock is mantled by
older gravels and alluvium and eolian (wind blown) sands. A geologic map of the area is shown
in Figure 1.
Based on data obtained from the Colorado Division of Mining and Geology (DMG),
several active and inactive pits exist in the area. These include the Industrial Park, Lamar Park,
Project No. D07.090 - 06/13/07 1
7090txt
