6.4 Deer Road Kill Study
Per the monitoring requirement from the BLM, NSI compiled deer road kill data throughout 2008
for vehicles traveling to and from the mine site. NSI received no reports of deer killed by
employees or contract vehicles in 2008.
6.5 Raptor Survey
Per mitigation requirements of the BLM Record of Decision, annual raptor breeding activity was
monitored. Raptor breeding activity inventories are conducted in the planned and current well
field to identify breeding/nesting areas. As a result of inventories, mitigation or modification of
drilling activity can be developed prior to disturbance.
In 2008, inventories of raptor transects were performed from May to July. No new nests were
spotted within the survey area.
6.6 Other Observations
No wild horses were spotted within the well-field. Elk, deer, coyotes, and fox were noted in and
around the well-field throughout the year.
6.6 Waste Disposal
Common domestic solid waste is collected in containers and periodically transported to the Rio
Blanco County landfill. Sewage from the plant is directed to a septic system with drain field.
Process wastewater, including plant wash down and contaminated precipitation runoff, was directed
to the process pond. A pump in the process pond allows NSI to recycle the water to the barren
system. The wastewater pond stores water from the cooling tower blow down, water softener brine
and blow down from the boilers.
2008 Annual Report 28 of 28
