STATE OF COLORADO
Bill Ritter, Jr., Governor GO1AR9do
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE 4y
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER OF
Thomas E. Box 128
Brush, CO 80723
Kris Pennington
Logan County Planning and Zoning Department
315 Main St., Suite 2
Sterling, CO 80751
Subject: Schumacher Gravel Pit Expansion
Ms. Pennington:
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the proposed expansion of the Schumacher Gravel Pit
located southwest of Peetz, CO. A site visit on Thursday, February 19, 2009 confirmed that the
proposed expansion site is located in shortgrass prairie rangeland. In addition to the current gravel pit
located adjacent to Logan County Road 45, another gravel pit is located northeast of the proposed
expansion site only a few hundred yards away. Several wind towers and gravel roads are located
throughout the area surrounding the proposed expansion area.
The following species of wildlife may be found on or near the proposed site: mule deer, pronghorn,
coyotes, white-tail and black-tail jackrabbits, and various song birds. No threatened or endangered
species utilize the proposed site. A raptor nest was found in one of the two trees on the southern border
of the current gravel pit; however, the nest currently appears to be inactive. It is recommended that the
trees and nest remain intact. Overall impacts to wildlife from the proposal will be minimal.
In reclamation of the site, the Division recommends best management practices be applied including the
grading of steep slopes and reseeding in native grasses to prevent erosion. If you have questions or need
further information, please contact District Wildlife Manager J.C. Webb at 970-522-2016.
Sincerely,
l
Tom Kroening ?
Area Wildlife Manager
Cc: S. Yamashita, K. Green, J.C. Webb
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Hams D.
