SECTION I - GEOLOGY
Mining History
Mining operations were conducted on this property by
Herron and Strong from about 1958 to 1962. During this
period of time this sand and gravel deposit was selected to
provide gravel for the U. S. Government Missle Bases in
Southeast Wyoming and Eastern Colorado. Prior to 1958
"Garner Sand and Gravel Company and Carl Broughton mined
material from the West side of the property.
Evaluation Procedures
During 1961 the geologic consulting firm of Doeringsfeld,
Amuedo and Ivey conducted a photogeologic and field evaluation
of sand and gravel deposits in east-central Colorado. The
area covered included approximately 3600 square miles lying
adjacent to and east of the Front Range of Colorado. The
southern boundary of the project area was near the point
where the South Platte River flows out of the Front Range.
The northern limit of the investigation was the confluence
of the Cache La Poudre and the South Platte Rivers.
During this investigation, data on the location, stratigraphic
distribution, areal extent, and continuity of sand and
gravel deposits were ascertained and the best area was
designated for detailed investigation. The area designated
for detailed investigation was the Lower Cache La Poudre
River Basin East of Greeley.
During the investigation it was found.that the gravels
in the Lower Cache La Poudre Basin meet the highest specifications
required for any aggregate period. The pebbles are 90-95%
quartz or quartzite and have been well sorted by stream
action. These gravels do not extent any further east from
the center of Greeley than 3 miles; and, further eastward
the gravels are supplanted by South Platte River Sands.
Many thin deposits in the Greeley area have been explored
but the remaining thick deposits are within the property for
which a Special Permit is now requested.
In 1973 A. A. Engineers and Associates of Denver,
Colorado were retained by Mr. Robert K. Jensen to further ,
evaluate the property, utilizing a Becker Drill. The results
of their investigation are herewith submitted on the following
pages.
-12-
