The reclamation plan currently calls for total topsoil replacement to a
minimum depth of 6 inches to 1 foot. Because this site will be in a very net positive
situation for topsoil, the Division would recommend at least 12 inches of topsoil should be
replaced in areas that are intended for revegetation. Replacing a thicker layer of the
most suitable growth medium will provide for a better chance of successful revegetation
establishment and ultimately a quicker release of the site.
Topsoil will be stripped and stockpiled as part of site preparation for each phase. Topsoil
will be replaced to the maximum depth possible with the topsoil generated within each
mining phase.
Additionally, the current reclamation plan states that topsoil stockpiles that will not be
disturbed for 12 months will be seeded and stabilized. The Division recommends that
topsoil stockpiles be seeded and stabilized as soon as possible if that material will be set
aside for reclamation, and preferably no longer than 6 months. Waiting an entire year
prior to seeding will likely result in erosion and weed control issues that will need to be
addressed.
tr6on
