PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS <br />1. Physiographic Features <br />The level to slightly sloping topography of this site may give <br />it the appearance of Table land. The slopes are 0 to 10% and <br />may slope in any direction. The elevation in general ranges <br />from 4000 feet to 5700 feet. <br />2. Climatic Features' <br />The annual precipitation is 11 to 17 inches of which 75 to 80% <br />falls during the growing season, May 12 to September 29, 169 (Akron) <br />days, average. A typical average rainfall pattern would be Akron, <br />'Colorado, which is: <br />Jan. Feb. Mar. Apr. Ma June Jul Aug. Sept. Oct. Nov:,, Dec. <br />.31 .18 .69 1.05 3.12 2.73 2.77 1.51 1.2 .73 .27 1.33 <br />The site is subject to hot drying winds. These usually are south <br />;r.southwest winds which occur early in growing season. The pre- <br />vailing winds are from -northwest and do less damage to growing <br />plants.' <br />3. Native (potential) Vegetation <br />The vegetation is typical plains short grass blue grams rangeland. <br />Blue grama is the dominant vegetation. Western wheatgrass and <br />sedges, buffalograss, needle 4nd thre4d, prickly peap and other <br />plants are generally associated with blue grama. Western wheat <br />is dominant in the swales and areas receiving extra moisture. <br />Sideoats grama and little bluestem are found occasionally. Snake- <br />weed and cactus increase in periods of drought or excessive grazing <br />or on a disturbed area. <br />The cover has a uniform appearance with a bunchgrass aspect with <br />vigorous leaf growth.
