Box 53
Hartsel, CO 81149
Permit Comments for Meadows Mine, NumberM-84-1 0 1.
Dear Mr. Scanl4
For Wildlife-
For People
Thank you for the opporhmity to comment on the Meadows Mine located in Park County, Colorado
(Case Number: M-84-101). Our goal at the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) is to provide
complete, consistent and timely information to all entities who request comment on matters within-our-
statutory authority and our mission-which is to protect, preserve, enhance and manage wildlife and their
environment for the use, bonefit, and enjoyment of the people of Colorado and its visitors.
Local" District Wildlife Manager Ron Zaccagnini has visited the site and is familiar with the ongoing
operations located at the Meadows Mine. The Colorado Division of Wildlife would like to offer the
following comments and recommendations concerning the mining operations and reclamation plan.
This mine has been in operation for over ten years and this permit will allow continued
operation and will outline the reclamation plan.
The site is and, high mountain rangeland, and there are no threatened or endangered species
utilizing it at this time. The American bald eagle is a winter resident in South Park that uses
the South Platte River as a food source. The South Platte River is within a half a mile of the
mining operations. The project, as proposed, has not and should not impact this use in. the
future. Pronghorn use the area and are common on site. They have not been detrimentally
affected by this operation.
The primary wildlife use on site is by small game, i.e.: cottontail rabbits, and predators such
.as coyote. Avian predators include golden eagle, rough-legged hawk and various falcons. All
of these have been temporarily displaced from the site, but the operation has not posed a
threat to their survival. The long term potential for nun off erosion impacting the South Platte
River and the fishery there does exist, however it has not been an issue to date. Rocky soil
conditions are not conducive to detrimental erosion.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Hams D. Sherman, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Robert Bray, Chair.
