The Whirlwind Mine water
treatment plant is located at 30100 5110 Road, Gateway, Colorado 81522. Discharge of
treated water from the Whirlwind Mine is allowed in accordance with Colorado
Discharge Permit System (CDPS) permit number CO-0047562.
On November 24, 2008 the Whirlwind Mine was put on stand-by status. At this time, the
mine will continue to be dewatered during stand-by and Energy Fuels will continue to
treat and discharge mine water and to comply with CDPS permit conditions. Mine water
collects in the mine at a slow rate (approximately 2 to 3 gpm) and is being pumped into
the untreated water tank and treated in batch runs, as necessary. Currently, batch runs are
occurring at a rate of approximately one run per month. One batch run occurred from
January 12 to 15, 2009. A monthly discharge sample was collected on January 13, 2009
in accordance with the aforementioned permit. Analytical sample results indicate that
there were no exceedances of the effluent limitations during the January 2009 batch run
discharge.
A total of 90,000 gallons of water were treated and discharged in January 2009. This is
well below the permitted discharge volume of 930,000 gallons (based on the 0.03 mgd
permit limit over 31 days).
Dissolved iron, sulfate, and nitrate levels are being monitored in the discharge samples at
the request of WQCD and the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety. Dissolved
iron in the discharge sample was less than 0.03 mg/L, sulfate was detected at 101 mg/L,
and nitrate was detected at 4.3 mg/L.
Energy Fuels, Inc. 44 Union Blvd., Suite 600
www.energyfuels.com Lakewood, Colorado 80228
Phone: 303-974-2140
Fax: 303-974-2141
