Cattany
Grand Junction, CO 81506 Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
RE: North Thompson Creek Mine (C-1981-025)
2007 and 2008 Annual Reclamation Report (ARR)
Dear Mr. Stover:
The Division has received copies of the 2007 and 2008 Annual Reclamation Reports for
the North Thompson Creek Mine. Thank you for your timely submittal of these reports.
The original disturbed area for the North Thompson Creek Mine was 65.2 acres. Of this
area all of the acreage has undergone a Phase I and a Phase II Bond Release. An
additional 60.9 acres have undergone a Phase III Bond Release. The remaining areas are
in long-term facilities or have been reclaimed for 10 years or less. North Thompson
Creek has applied for a final bond release for the site (SL-06) but the Division has not yet
proposed a decision.
On the SL-06 inspection (on 17 April 2007) it was noted that three small sinkholes had
formed on the surface of the refuse pile. Additionally, it was noted that the Mine No. 3
shaft backfill had collapsed. It was reported in the 2007 ARR that these areas were
backfilled and seeded and that they accounted for less than 0.1 acres, combined. On 2
June 2008 the Division performed a follow-up inspection of these locations and noted
that the areas had been stabilized. The Division does not have any questions or
comments regarding the 2007 Annual Reclamation Report.
No reclamation or sampling activities were performed in 2008. The Division does not
have any questions or comments regarding the 2008 Annual Reclamation Report.
Sincerely,
James R Stark
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Sandy Brown
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
