fi
1
Earth Engineering Consultants, Inc.
EEC Project No. 1082030
Turnpike Reservoir -Feasibility Study
May 5, 2008
Page 3
Moisture content tests were completed on each of the recovered samples. In addition, the
unconfined strength of appropriate samples was estimated using a calibrated hand
penetrometer. Atterberg Limits and washed sieve analysis tests were completed to evaluate
the quantity and plasticity of fines in the subgrade samples. Swell/consolidation tests were
completed to evaluate the potential for the subgrade materials to change volume with
variation in moisture and load. Additional laboratory testing procedures included moisture-
density relationship/standard Proctor density, and falling head permeability characteristics.
Results of the outlined tests are indicated on the attached boring logs and summary sheets.
As part of the testing program, all samples were examined in the laboratory by an engineer
and classified in accordance with the attached General Notes and the Unified Soil
Classification System, based on the soil's texture and plasticity. The estimated group symbol
for the Unified Soil Classification System is indicated on the boring logs and a brief
description of that classification system is included with this report. Classification of the
bedrock was based on visual and tactual observation of disturbed samples and auger cuttings.
Coring and/or petrographic analysis may reveal other rock types.
SITE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
The proposed reservoir development project is located northeast of the intersection of County
Line Road/Weld County Road 1 and Highway 52 in Weld County, Colorado. The site was
formerly a sand and gravel mine site with an approximate 32-acre reclaimed, unlined "lake."
The site is currently being considered for development of an approximate 800 to 1,000 acre-
foot reservoir. ASCI presently mines portions of the site. Various construction/production
related equipment such as scales, conveyors, tanks, and stockpiles of a variety of materials
surround the previously mined areas. Boulder Creek is located along the western boundary
of the site and flows in the northeast direction. In general, the topography at the site slopes in
the north to northeast direction, with an estimated relief of about 15-feet.
An EEC field engineer was on site during drilling to evaluate the subsurface conditions
encountered and direct the drilling activities. Field logs prepared by EEC site personnel were
based on visual and tactual observation of disturbed samples and auger cuttings. The final
