DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES
?J
Ash Disposal
During the calendar year 2008, a total of 46,897 tons (2,039 loads) of mixed
fly ash and bottom ash were transported to, and disposed of at the
Keenesburg Mine site. Since A-Pit reclamation has been completed and that
pit closed for some time, the entire quantity of ash delivered during 2008
was placed in South B-Pit. This brings the total B-Pit ash volume to
604,410 tons (5,667 tons in North B-Pit and 598,743 tons in South B-Pit).
The total amount of ash disposed of at the Keenesburg Mine site by the end
of 2008 was 848,762 tons.
Consistent with the Permit approvals, the Keenesburg facility continues to
only accept ash that is the by-product of the coal combustion process, from
the power plant facility located in Golden, Colorado, at the MillerCoors
(formerly Coors Brewing Company) facility. Since September 1995, this
power plant has been owned and operated by SUEZ Energy Generation NA,
Inc. (formerly Trigen-Colorado Energy Corporation). The current
agreements between SUEZ and CEC dictate that the ash from this power
plant will continue to be transported to the Keenesburg Mine site until the
reclamation activities have been concluded.
During the calendar year 2008, the majority of the steam and stoker cal used
for fuel at the SUEZ power plant was mined and shipped from the Oxbow
Carbon and Minerals (Oxbow), Elk Creek Mine, located near Somerset,
Colorado, under terms and conditions of a supply contract with Coors
Brewing Company/MillerCoors LLC. Smaller quantities of steam coal were
furnished by Oxbow on a substitute basis from Bowie Resources, Ltd., from
the Bowie #2 Mine (a neighbor to the Elk Creek Mine), and from Colowyo
Coal Company, from its mine located southwest of Craig, Colorado. All of
these coals have been previously tested and approved in accordance with the
requirements of the Permit, and have been previously used at the SUEZ
power plant. The stoker coal is produced from the Elk Creek Mine, and then
processed through the Terror Creek Loadout facility.
Annual testing of the ash produced by the burning of this coal as the SUEZ
power plant is conducted as part of the ongoing qualification of the ash for
w disposal at the Keenesburg Mine site.
