VEGETATION MONITORING REPORT
11
Vegetation monitoring at the Keenesburg Mine site for 2008 was limited to
data collection in preparation for the anticipated submittal of a partial "Phase
III Bond Release Application". A review of the precipitation data included
with this Annual Hydrology and Reclamation Report (pages 83-84) will
underscore the reason for the absence of the monitoring report presentation
which is normally part of this AHR Report.
Aside from significant rainfall events across a couple of days during the
month of August, which amounted to almost half of the annual total, the site
received only meager amounts of moisture during each of the remaining
eleven months of the year. While it did not "dry up and blow away", the
vegetation was challenged to do much more than survive. The welcome
moisture in August offered sufficient incentive to result in the collection of
vegetation sampling data for inclusion in a Phase III Application, but was
considered a marginal sampling for the annual vegetation monitoring report.
Coors Energy Company (CEC), through its consultant (Savage & Savage,
Inc.) approached the representative of the Division of Reclamation Mining
and Safety about the dry conditions and vegetation monitoring concerns.
What follows (page 3) is a copy of the letter received in response to the
inquiry. Baring an extreme continuation of this "dry cycle" through the next
growing season, CEC is intent on resuming the vegetation monitoring
program in 2009.
0
AHR-2008 -2-
