CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF REVEGETATION
There were 9.8 acres reseeded during 2008. The areas revegetated prior to and in 2008 at the Seneca II Mine
are shown on the Seneca 112008 Annual Reclamation - Seeded map in the exhibits section of this report.
SEDIMENTATION POND SURVEYS
SCC is required by Permit C-80-005 to monitor sedimentation ponds for sediment storage capacities on
varying schedules. Per page 7-333 in the PAP, capacity surveys at Ponds 002 and 003 are required every 5
years and at Ponds 004 and 008 every 2 years. Since all ponds were surveyed in 2006, Ponds 004 and 008
were surveyed in 2008, while ponds 002 and 003 will not be resurveyed until 2011. This schedule provides a
sediment yield history and gives advance warning to operations personnel when sediment clean-out work is
required.
In accordance with Rule 4.05.6(11)(c), SCC visually inspects each pond a minimum of quarterly each year.
During these inspections, any drastic change in sedimentation storage or sudden increase in a sediment delta
at the inlet to the pond would be detected which could require mitigation.
Based on the 2006 and 2008 surveys, all sediment ponds have sufficient sediment storage. Additionally, all
ponds have been discharging in compliance with the approved NPDES permit effluent limitations. Yearly
sediment delivery estimates to the ponds are considerably less than originally calculated, since the areas in
these watersheds have now been reclaimed and revegetated.
The following table lists the 2006 and 2008 surveyed capacities of Seneca II sediment ponds:
Table 08.3
Sediment Pond Capacities
Pond
Number 2006 Capacity 2008 Capacity Minimum Allowable
Water Storage
Pond 002 171.9 NA 106.9 ac.ft.
Pond 003 3.7 NA 2.1 ac. ft.
Pond 004 5.6 5.5 3.0 ac. ft.
Pond 008 6.2 6.3 2.9 ac. ft.
PECOCO 21.7 NA NA.
From the past history of sediment delivery to all of these ponds there is adequate sediment storage capacity
available. These ponds were approved as permanent
STOCK TANKS
There are 13 stock tanks in the Seneca II mined/reclaimed area and are all classified as permanent and are
certified annually. No new stock tanks were constructed during the 2008 season.
WILDLIFE MONITORING
• Seneca Coal Company contracted Jones and Stokes to conduct wildlife monitoring at the Seneca II mine.
The work included:
4
