In all other years, nesting
• information was obtained between 21 April and 6 May.
SANDHILL CRANE ACTIVITY
Although sandhill cranes were documented within the permit area in late April 2008, no
nesting activity was observed during the site visit. Biologists recorded two adult sandhill cranes
foraging within reclamation in SW SE Section 12, TSN, R87W on 28 April. Cranes nested
nearby, from 2004 through 2006, at the periphery of a mine reservoir at the south edge of the
permit area in SW SE Section 12. A pair of cranes was observed in SE SW Section 7 on 28
April. Observations indicated that the pair might be on a territory, but no courtship or nesting
behavior was observed.
LITERATURE CITED
Cannon, R.W. and F.L. Knopf. 1981.
