Three wells; YSAL1, 3, and 12; monitor water quality in the Sage Creek
alluvium. Well 1 is the furthest downstream well. It displays an
increasing TDS trend. Well 3 is upstream of Well 1, and is located along
Sage Creek, just below the discharge from NPDESI2. It displays a
slightly increasing TDS, but with the peak TDS value occurring in 1997.
Well 12 is the furthest upstream well, and is upgradient of all mining.
It displays an increasing TDS trend (SF = 0.5).
- Wadge Overburden. Well YOV28 monitors overburden water quality in the
Annand Draw basin. It displays a stable TDS trend. Wells YOV29 and 30
exist in the Sage Creek basin. Well YOV29, prior to 1998, never had
enough water for sampling. However, subsequent water levels in this well
had increased, and three water samples were collected in 1998 and 1999.
In May 2000 this well went dry and continues to be dry. Well YOV30
displays a stable TDS trend.
- Wadge Coal. Well YW28 monitors coal seam water quality in the Annand
Draw basin. It displays a stable TDS trend. Wells YW29 and 30 exist in
the Sage Creek basin. Well YW29 displays a stable TDS trend. Well YW30
displays a recently increasing TDS trend.
- Wadge Underburden. Well YWU28 monitors underburden water quality in
the Annand Draw basin. It displays a stable TDS trend. Wells YWU29 and
30 exist in the Sage Creek basin. Well YWU29 displays a stable TDS
trend. Well YWU30 displays an increasing TDS trend.
- Wolf Creek Coal and Underburden. As of September 2002, Well YWC33
monitors the Wolf Creek coal water quality in the Sage Creek basin.
This well displays a stable TDS trend. Mining of this seam began in
November 2002. Well YWCU33 now monitors the Wolf Creek underburden water
quality in the Sage Creek basin. It displays a decreasing TDS trend.
Comparison of Ground Water Quality to Water Use Standards. SCC has
compiled a list of ground water standards for agricultural uses (Table
5). This list is composed of Colorado Department of Health ground water
standards (CDPHE, Reg. 41, May 2008).
4
