STATE OF COLORADO REFER TO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER b (i?
John W. Mumma, Director 7 N
6060 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 80216 OF
Telephone: (303) 297-1192
For Wildlife -
For People
Mr. Mike Stanton
Quaternay Environmental Consultants
1210 South park Drive
Monument, Colorado 80132
Dear Mike:
Thanks for the copy of the NRCS comments on the proposed gravel operation called Chaparral
Meadows Mine, Number M-84-101. As I told you on the phone, it is a bit difficult to comment on
such a project without the entire document to refer to, however, some things can be said quite
definitely.
The site is dry rangeland, and there are no threatened or endangered species utilizing it at this time.
The American Bald Eagle is a winter resident to south park, and does use the river s a food source.
However, the project as proposed should not impact this use. The primary wildlife use on site is by
small game, ie: cottontail rabbits, and predators such as coyote. Avian predators include golden
eagle, rough-legged hawk and various falcons. All of these will be displaced from the site, but the
operation will not pose a threat to their survival.
the long term potential for run off erosion impacting the South Platte River and the fishery therein
does exist, however if the reclamation plan and the NRCS recommendations are followed. this should
be minimized or eliminated. It appears that all other wildlife concerns have been addressed.
Ifyou have any further questions, or if I can be of further assistance, please call. When you get the
plan in some final form, I'd like to take a look at it. Thanks.
Sincerely,
ai?c_aOW?
District Wildlife Manager
cc; Jones
file
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, James S.
