Abstract
At the request of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest
(GMUG), Grand Valley District, and Bowie Resources, Ltd. (BRL), a Class III cultural
resource inventory for a proposed Lease Modification Area in Delta County, Colorado, was
conducted by Grand River Institute. Within the project area of approximately 460 acres, a
total of 81 acres of Forest Service administered lands was surveyed due to the heavy
vegetation and steep terrain. The inventory and report preparation were performed by Carl
E. Conner (Principal Investigator), Barbara Davenport, Jim Conner, and Dana Archuleta.
The survey was undertaken to ensure the project's compliance with federal legislation
governing the identification and protection of cultural resources that will be affected by a
government approved action. The purpose of the cultural resources investigation was to
locate and identify resources within the tract, to evaluate these resources' eligibility for
listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and to make management
recommendations for those sites found to be eligible or potentially eligible.
A prefield files search indicated that no cultural resources were previously recorded
within the project boundaries. Field work was performed between the 19"' through the 24"'
of June 2008. Because of the heavy vegetation cover and steep slopes, this inventory was
• limited to the survey of open terrain provided by existing roads, trails, and erosional areas.
Because of the limitations no cultural resources were newly recorded.
As directed by the new 36 CFR800 regulations, this inventory included the search for
relevant traditional cultural properties. Based on the files search, field survey, and these
researchers' personal knowledge, no such communities exist within the project area.
Accordingly, archaeological clearance is recommended.
• ii
