Geotechnical Evaluation of Mine-Induced Earthquakes on Bruce Park Dam
Bowie Resources, Limited
June 2002
generate a total of 100 magnitude 1.75 events, 20 magnitude 2.0 events, and 5
magnitude 2.5 events.
5. Cumulative deformation of the landslide is expected to be about 11 inches if the
phreatic surface remains at the ground surface and mining activities over a 2-year
period generate a total of 100'magnitude 1.75 events, 20 magnitude 2.0 events, and 5
magnitude 2.5 events.
6. In our opinion, movements of the amount identified in Items 3 through 5 above are
not expected to cause significant threat to the integrity of the slope, reservoir, or dam.
7. In our opinion, additional monitoring of the dam and saddle dam, beyond that
required by the Office of the State Engineer for a jurisdictional dam of this size and
class is not required to address risks associated with mine-induced seismicity.
Based on the results of the evaluations performed and documented in this report, we
recommend the following:
1. Data should be collected from the piezometers and inclinometers in the existing
landslide at least three times each year.
2. The collected data should be tabulated and plotted on a continuous time scale so that
changes in water levels and movement, if any, of the landslide can be easily
identified. The data collection should be performed and reviewed by a Colorado
registered Professional Engineer who has experience with dams, landslides, and
seismicity.
02•05•2: GeotecAnical Evaluation of Mine-Induced EartAquaka
GEI Consultants, Inc.
