Geotechnical Data Report Bruce Park Dam
Bowie Resources, Limited
April 2001
Section 2 - Project Description
The Bruce Park Dam and the impounded reservoir (shown as Terror Creek Reservoir on the
USGS topographic map) are located in Delta County, Colorado, approximately 4 miles north
of the town of Bowie. The facility consists of a main dam and a saddle (auxiliary) dam. The
dam and reservoir location are shown on the Site Vicinity Map, Figure 1. The dam, saddle
dam, and appurtenant facilities are shown on the Project Features Map, Figure 2.
The reservoir is an off-channel reservoir located across a topographic saddle and drainage
divide. The reservoir is impounded on the south by the main dam and on the north by the
saddle dam. The main dam is on an unnamed tributary of the East Fork of Terror Creek,
which is a tributary of Tensor Creek. The saddle dam is on an unnamed tributary of Iron
Point Gulch, which is a tributary of Hubbard Creek. Both the East Fork of Terror Creek and
Hubbard Creek drain into the North Fork of the Gunnison River about 6 miles downstream.
Based on information from the State Engineer's Office and the topographic site plan
provided by Bowie Resources, Ltd., the main dam appears to have a maximum embankment
height of approximately 58 feet, a crest length of 620 feet, and a minimum crest width of 12
feet. The saddle dam appears to have a maximum embankment height of 23 feet, a crest
length of 460 feet, and a minimum crest width of 12 feet. The upstream slopes of the
embankments are 3H:1 V (horizontal to vertical) and the downstream slopes are 2.5H:1 V.
The elevation of the crest of both embankments is approximately 8,186 feet. The elevation
of the spillway, which is on the left abutment of the saddle dam, is approximately 8,180 feet.
The spillway is a concrete overflow weir with a concrete control section approximately 3 feet
high and 15 feet wide. The reservoir has a reported storage capacity of 598 acre-feet with a
water surface area of 33 acres. The reservoir was empty during the time of our
investigations. The outlet works consists of a 14-inch-diameter conduit through the
maximum section of the main dam. The conduit is a welded steel pipe with a reinforced
concrete encasement. The intake to the outlet works is a hand operated hoist slide gate. The
outlet works pipe discharges to the natural ground surface.
Terror Ditch and Reservoir Company operates the reservoir for irrigation purposes. A
diversion ditch from the main channel of the East Fork of Terror Creek fills the reservoir.
The reservoir is filled in the spring, and is typically drawn down completely by the end of the
irrigation season and is empty during the winter.
GEI Consultants, Inc. 3 99292 0,-0416 Geotechnical Data Report
